In my earlier blog, I have written the three components of achievements. Today, I thought of writing today about how we dilute the true purpose of achievement. I wanted to share a small story of one of my upcoming work. I named this chapter – Story of Robert. Here it goes: I met Robert one year back as he wanted me to help on some issues. Robert was a bright student since school days. But during Graduation, he met an accident the month before his final exam and couldn’t study much. He recovered just 5 days before the exam and he felt he can never pass the final exam with good marks and hence he opted to skip the exam. Once the final results are declared and all his classmates became graduates. Robert felt very depressed and he was so upset that he decided not to take any further exams and he left his study.

But, he was a brave guy and recovered very soon and he was inspired by Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and other life stories of eminent personalities who left their studies but became super successful in business. He decided to start a business and he took up the franchise of a computer company and launched his computer showroom business.
He was simply doing GREAT!!! In just 3 years he expanded his business, opened 3 more branches and had more than 32 employees. He was earning more than his classmates now. He was very happy. The computer company was very satisfied with Robert’s performance.
Yesterday I got a call from him. As he walked to my room, he said “Hi Coach!!! How’s life?”
“As usual, Great!!!” – I said.
After speaking for few minutes, I came to the point. “So, why you wanted to meet me so eagerly?” – I asked.
“I recently got a letter from my franchise that they are sponsoring 3 of their top franchise owners to an evening MBA and I am one of them”
“Wow, that’s great !!!” – I was super excited.
But Robert was silent. After minutes of silence, he spoke: “I always wanted to do MBA”. He continued, “And I was very excited. But now I came to know I cannot pursue it as I am not a graduate. Now I am very depressed and honestly, I am unable to concentrate on my business”. Robert was sad and depressed.
I asked him two questions:
1) Was graduation with good marks your objective or way to achievement, and in both the cases why you decided not to pursue it just because your classmates completed it earlier than you would have completed it?
2) MBA is for sharpening your skills, adding more knowledge and a degree. What excites you the most among them? You can learn what you will be taught in MBA. You can at this state of your business, hire great consultants and can employ MBAs. They why not getting an MBA degree affect your way to achievement?
In both of the cases, Robert had the same answer – “SILENCE”.
Sometimes, we get so dissolved by other incidents that we actually forget what’s the true purpose of achieving what we want. That’s exactly what happened here. And if you allow yourself to dissolve like this, soon you will lose focus and when you realize you have lost such, coming back becomes a troublesome work. Every incident that’s happening to you will happen and pass by but if you are always aware of the true purpose of your achievement, you will never be dissolved with those incidents. That’s what true focus is all about.
